Mimi is a comedy-drama film starring Kriti Sanon as the lead role released on 26th July 2021. The film was written and directed by Laxman Utekar and Rohan Shankar. The movie is produced by Dinesh Vijan, Maddock Films and Jio Studios. The movie is the remake of the Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychy and it is based on Samruddhi Porey's original story, where an aspiring actress from a small town agrees to bear a child of a foreigner couple as a surrogate mother. The story turned into an unexpected event when the parents refused the child who was still in the womb of the surrogate mother.
The movie depicts the perfect picture of motherhood. Mimi (Kriti Sanon), a small town girl who wanted to go to bollywood, was offered Rs. 20 lacs to be a surrogate for an American couple. The middleman Bhanu, played by Pankaj Tripathi, convinced both the parties in an impeccable way. Mimi wanted the money to go to bollywood to become an actress but she also wanted to hide her pregnancy from the society and her parents but the situation turned against her when the American couple refused to take the child with anomaly. Mimi refused to abort the baby and decided to give birth and raise the child with the help of Bhanu, who was married but still pretended to be the child's father.
The movie is a perfect amalgamation of comedy, drama and emotion along with Kriti Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi's commendable acting. The movie not only focused on motherhood but also the sister-like friendship between Mimi and Shama, the daughter of a Maulvi and an abused wife. Before Mimi, there were two other famous films on surrogacy which didn't work at the box office-Do Dulhann (1983) and Chori chori chupke chupke (2001). The film Mimi is an above-average movie and I would like to give 3.5 out of 5. For the actors I would give 4.8 out of 5, based solely on their acting skill. The movie was rated 8.1/10 on IMDb.
